Task: Select a dataset of your choice and create a data visualization formatted for an Instagram post.

I participated in an intensive course in data visualization taught by a visual journalist from Aftenposten. For the assignment, we were asked to select a dataset of our choice and translate it into an Instagram-post–style visual. I chose a report on partner violence and homicide in Norway. The dataset revealed alarming and thought-provoking numbers that I felt were important to communicate.

In this project, I focused on how to use the contrast between a beautiful flower and a brutal subject matter. It was important to me not to trivialize the content, while still using the flower as a metaphor for something that is both beautiful and fragile.

The dark background was chosen to contrast with the pink and red tones of the flower, emphasizing the seriousness of the topic.

I also explored how one flower could tell two stories. By working with textured sections within the petals, I experimented with how these elements could represent subcategories in the data and provide additional context.
