How can we create a network of green spaces across Milan that both mitigate environmental challenges and foster stronger community connections, by empowering residents to actively take part in creating and maintaining greenery in their neighborhoods?
Radicanco (from Italian, meaning “taking root”) is a community-driven project that reimagines green spaces in urban environments. Rooted in BAM’s mission (Biblioteca degli Alberi Milano) to combine nature, culture, and public life, the project brings greenery closer to people by creating a network of satellite green spaces across Milan. Our design includes modular planters equipped with sensors, aimed at reducing the Urban Heat Island effect while encouraging social interactions and active local engagement.
The system uses modular planters with sensors to monitor environmental factors like temperature and air quality. Beyond ecological benefits such as reducing the Urban Heat Island effect, the planters serve as micro-hubs where residents gather, interact, and care for greenery together.
Research revealed a strong need for inclusive, small-scale public spaces where people can connect informally, share responsibility, and reconnect with nature. With social isolation and climate pressures increasing, Radicando explores how green infrastructure can also nurture belonging, everyday exchange, and cultural vitality.
Our process included mapping green gaps in Milan and studying public use, alongside creating an offering map, system map, service blueprint, stakeholder map, and user journey map to frame the ecosystem. We worked with scenario building, product development, and 3D printing, while also designing a brand identity and visual communication strategy.
Radicandos values: Innovation, sustainability, Growth, Inclusion, Community and Participation.Placing Radicando planters in Milan’s least green and warmest areas helps cool the city, improve air quality, and support equity.Plants are chosen for their roles in supporting biodiversity and sustainability, grouped into key functional and aesthetic categories.

Under the "BAM Radicando" tab on BAM's already existing website, users can explore where the touchpoints are located, submit suggestions for where the next ones should be placed, sign up for workshops, and learn about the plants from the plant library. When attending weekly ritual, check list and guide on how to take care of the touchpoint will also be provided.
