How can we design a smart TV that engages everyone watching and makes group decision making smoother and more inclusive?
Unify is a Smart TV experience focused on young adults who often watch together in shared flats or with family. The system blends personalized recommendations with social, game-like features, helping users move past browsing fatigue and turn content selection into a playful, shared activity.
The concept introduces individual and group profiles, a streamlined navigation model, and gamified decision-making tools like Lucky Wheel, Pick or Pass, and Vote & Chill. A remote web-app making it scalable, accessible, and more sustainable. The system also improves usability, accessibility, and customization across profiles, lists, and settings.
Our research revealed major frustrations in current Smart TV systems: cluttered interfaces, poor personalization, unintuitive navigation, and limited support for group viewing. Users wanted cleaner, customizable layouts, fairer group decision tools, and more engaging, social features that reflect how people actually watch TV together.
Our process included benchmarking existing Smart TV platforms, web scraping user feedback, and conducting user research with participants aged 18–35. We applied methods such as tree sorting, card sorting, remote testing, iterative wireframes, and scenario building, alongside developing information architecture, prototyping from low- to high-fidelity, and 3D printing remotes.
The web app allow multiple people to join the content games.
In Vote & Chill, you tap to vote for a movie. In Lucky Wheel, you tap to select a movie. In Pick or Pass, you swipe left or right to pick or pass a movie.
